"Thanks Nihaia." She smiled. "I'm gonna try and roast this later. I haven't done it in a while but it's not hard and I think they'd like it. It's gonna be kind of like camping only without the fighting."

"You're welcome." Nihaia said with a smile.

Nihaia wasn't sure what all of the talk about steam whistles was about, but she got the feeling that "steam whistles" meant something else entirely. After all, Xander owned the gold steam whistles, not the tiny ones that one of the other stallions who had had displays in the convention had. It just didn't make sense otherwise. Especially given the others' reactions to the dragon stallion's (Creamy's) comment. So she ignored the banter in favor of heading upstairs with Brimstone.

"Personally I want to drop all this stuff off and go for a swim."

"A swim sounds nice." she agreed.

Nihaia picked up one of the keys on the hook near the front door at random. Once upstairs, she walked down the hall, trying each room until coming to the third room on the right hand side (room 3). The door opened, so she set her bag on the floor at the foot of the bed. Then she took the food she had bought at the store, along with her key, and locked the door behind her. It wasn't that she didn't trust the others, but after everything that had happened, she didn't want to take the chance of someone getting into the cottage somehow, and getting into her room. Then she headed downstairs, and carefully placed the food into the storage areas designed for such a purpose. While she was doing so, Jerold came in, and pressed a large red button on what looked like it might be the fridge thing he had been talking about earlier. Remembering that he'd said that it took a while for the device to get cold enough to freeze things, Nihaia found some containers, and poured some of her various fruit juices into them, one container for each flavor. Then she sealed the containers, and placed them in what she hoped was the part that would freeze things. She then placed the bottles of juice in the fridge thing along with the milk, and some of the fruits she had bought.

Once the food was put away, Nihaia entered the sitting area, and glanced at the books on the bookcase. Some, like The Mechanic's Handbook, held no interest for her whatsoever. But she did find a cookbook that looked interesting. She flipped through it idly for a few minutes, noting some recipes that she wanted to try. Nihaia wondered if there was any chance of stopping at a bookstore so she could see if she could afford a cookbook or two. Arcognian cookbooks would be a nice memento of her trip to Arcognia. They were practical because they would be very useful, and they were unique to Arcognia. Nihaia could easily see herself preparing a few Arcognian dishes for some of the people back in her home village as an appreciation of letting her work for them to earn her meals and shelter while she was growing up.

After a while, she headed outside to the caldera so she could admire the view, and swim in the pleasantly cool water.

Room #5 was next to the stairs which suited Brimstone just fine. She was able to drop her stuff off and lock the door without having to search too hard. With that done she went by the kitchen to put her food in the only container that seemed like it would do the job.

As she headed for the lake she found herself with company, and smiled back at Ulrich briefly. He hadn't really gotten on her nerves and she wasn't a big fan of guilt by association, so it didn't bother her any. She gave a little wave to Nihaia when the fairy appeared, and slipped into the water with a happy sigh.

Emrys was less fond of swimming. When she started going in he jumped off and stood just out of reach of the water while squeaking his disappointment at her. How could she go off and leave him on shore like this? Someone might try to take his key!

"Emrys, you can find another perch for a little while." Brimstone laughed. "Why don't you go sit on Ulrich? He's not swimming." She took a deep breath and ducked under the water, her antlers acting like a sharks fin to show where she swam.

Rorschach was still chuckling to himself over the 'smallest steam whistle' comment when they approached the cottage. He stopped to admire the view and, a such, did not enter the cottage until some of the others had taken their keys.

He stared forlornly at the place where key 8 had been, and then more forlornly still at the place where key 3 had been. Clearly that number's symmetry was inferior being as it only worked horizontally, while 8's symmetry worked on both the horizontal and the vertical, but it would have satisfied him at least...

2... 4... 6... 7...

"Ugh..."

He reached up and picked 2, because no matter how you arranged two dots, they had to be symmetrical. Up he trotted to the room to drop his things, and he spent a few minutes straightening sheets and adjusting the way things sat on dressers. Once his... peculiarities... were addressed, he went to join the others on the beach.

He sat in the sand to watch.

Xander watched as first Ulrich then Sea Foam were invited into Knobbly Cottage. He felt so angry, but he wasn't about to stew for long, alternative accommodation had to be found, and then there was Tari to worry about, if she'd still have anything to do with him. He walked towards the Boat Master, Cranshaw Ratchet, who was bobbing about in the water just beside one of the small steam-powered boats and decided to chance his luck there.

Putting on his most amenable face, which was quite a struggle, Xander called out to the SeaPony:

"Excuseth me! Boat Master! Knowest thou of alternative accommodation than the Inn and these...cottages here, my good fellow?" he nearly said 'wretched' cottages but pulled himself up at the last moment.

Ratchet bobbed closer to eye the grey Valkyrie, and decided his speech, clothes and jewellery were indicative of a pony with a large wallet. "Aye, for a price!"

Xander walked closer to Ratchet and bent his head down closer to the other. "Pray continue."

Pointing to the last cottage on this side of the Caldera, he told Xander that it was currently empty and that he held the lease to it. "'Tis smaller and more cosy than these nearer cottages, it should suit thyself and... thy companion well," Ratchet finished with a wink.

Xander took a deep breath and then reached into his wallet. "Prithee how much for a few days?"

Ratchet watched gleefully as Xander pulled out his wallet and nodded greedily as the PG tinkled. "That shouldst cover it nicely, sir," he said at last, getting out of the water to stow the cash away and give Xander the key.

Business sorted, Xander walked back up the beach, pointedly ignored those sitting by the water and looked around for Tari. Not seeing her for the moment he took his belongings and purchases, walked towards Ulrich and muttered in his ears that he was staying at the far cottage, Tinkle Cottage, and that Ulrich, was welcome to join him along with Tari and Sea Foam if they desired. Then he made his way up the beach, cutting a lonely figure against the distant rising reddish-brown hills.

Tinkle Cottage was indeed smaller, it had just four bedrooms upstairs, and the fittings and furnishings were rather worn, but it was better than sleeping on the beach. Xander dumped his stuff upstairs in a plain bedroom with slightly fraying carpet and then huffed back downstairs to put his food away. There was no refridgerator here. He put his bathroom things in the small tiled bathroom that had seen better days and then, because it really was too depressing, went outside again to sit alone by the lake, far from the others.

[[OOC: Sorry, things have been nuts here @_@ I keep having the page open to reply, then having to dash off and do something. Catching up properly, now (and PMs tomorrow >.<) Also, 3am post is terribly written]]

Tari was rather taken aback at how their situation had dissolved. Though it was amusing to see Ironchisel have at Brimstone (not to mention very just), it had rather caused havoc in the middle of the little store. Amid the screeching, Tari calmly placed a few pieces of pony gold on the counter, about what she estimated her shopping was worth, and eased her way outside.

It was very well to start the little argument, but unless she was winning, she wasn't about to stay a part of it.It was more entertaining to simply watch. She raised an eyebrow as everyone left the store and Ironchisel marched back up to the inn to retrieve their key.

She didn't have to wait overly long. Ironchisel soon returned, screeching his displeasure. Her ears flattened. Wonderful. Now what were they going to do?

Tari watched as Winter and Sea Foam were invited away, but no such invitation was sent her way. She shot Creaklock and his party a cool look. If ever they found that thrice blasted whistle, Creaklock was going to find a few holes melted into it.

And then she would find something of Brimstone's to ruin. Maybe the little beastie.

Tari saw Ironchisel speak to some rustic looking nautical type, before he began plodding down the path alone. Well, really! With a snort, she trotted off after him, pausing a fair way away, as he entered a tatty little cottage. Well, it was better than setting up camp under a pier. Perhaps Sea Foam would join them. Winter, too. She guessed it was up to them to decide if they wanted to be with such a group of unrepentant liars.

As Ironchisel left and went to slump down by the lake, Tari entered the cottage. Ah, wonderful. It looked like something one would put recalcitrant servants in, not ponies of their ilk.

"Et's es better than bein' unner a pier," she repeated to herself, as she set her own things down in a spare room. She set the groceries in the little kitchen then, with a sigh, set them away in...somewhat of a logical manner. To Tari, at least, it seemed logical.

With her things placed in the bathroom, Tari considered what to do next. Go sulk in her room or see the lake.

The lure of the lake, in the end, proved too much. Coming from a landlocked little country, seeing so much water was enticing. She gave the little cottage one last, disgruntled, look over, before heading out to the lake. There, well apart from the others, and looking rather despondent, Ironchisel still sat. How could you be that depressed with such a grand little lake right there in front of you.

Blast the others and blast that ruddy whistle. Tari was going to enjoy the lake. She trotted down to the tide line and just stared out for a moment, marvelling at so much water in one place, before taking a cautious step into the water. It was cold but not horrifically so.

Tari turned around and, with a cheeky grin, flicked a little water at Ironchisel. "Tha' face es enou' ter mel' the stones aroun' yer, Mister Ironchisel," she teased. "Oor boil the fish een the lake. If'n yer don' star' cheerin' oop a liddle, Ah moigh' 'ave ter geet a liddle mure fero-shush wit' mah splashin'. Ah shoul', Ah reckon, wot wit' yer lea'in' me be'ind wit' the riff-raff."

Xander brightened visibly as Tari appeared and threw her lot in with his. The diminuitive Valkyrie usually didn't stay gloomy for long, his mind was always actively finding other schemes if the current one wasn't working.

Tari had begun flirting and splashing water at him, and it was impossible not to want to join in. Scrambling to his feet, Xander pulled his cloak off, placed it carefully on the beach then trotted towards where Tari was and into a few inches of water, where he began splashing her back. The day was taking a decidedly rosier turn.

"Melt the stones? Thou be a cheeky mare, and thou knowest it, Mistress Tari, thou art far from riff-raff, a comely mare such as thyself," Xander joked with a grin and splash in her direction, "But art thou swift enough to escape my splashes?" He reared slightly and launched himself in her direction playfully, wading further into the water, until he was chest deep.

*******************************

Ulrich listened to Xander's whisper that he had secured another cottage further up the beach. He felt at least relieved to be invited to join the Valkyrie, for much as he didn't trust him, it was precisely that reason that made him want to keep him right under his nose where he could see what he was getting up to. Otherwise he was a loose canon.

Emrys was looking at him expectantly. Ulrich hoped it wasn't because the stoat wanted to sit on him or do anything else. He decided that he'd join Xander and Tari, who he'd seen follow the little grey irritation up the shoreline, and got to his feet.

"I'm going to join Ironchisel and Miss Tari," he said a little apologetically to Rorschach, "To be honest, I want to keep an eye on him, don't trust him as far as I can throw him. I'll be seeing the rest of you tomorrow, no doubt," Ulrich said, and then lumbered back to Knobbly Cottage, collecting his few belongings and food bag, vacated Room 1 and headed up the beach towards where Tari and Xander were frolicking the water. He nodded a greeting to both, if they even noticed he was there.

"I'll get dinner started, shall I?" Ulrich said, then entered Tinkle Cottage. It was plain and even rather shabby, but Ulrich had seen worse, indeed, he'd grown up in worse conditions, so it really wasn't problematic. What was problematic was the two drama queens that he would be sharing personal space with.

Nihaia smiled, and waved back at Brimstone before joining the reindeer mare in the lake. The water was delightfully cool, and refreshing as she waded in until she could barely touch the bottom. Then she began to swim, allowing the simple pleasure of swimming with her friends to distract her from everything that had happened.

"The water is wonderful, isn't it?" she asked, speaking to no one in particular.

Sea Foam was horrified when her fears about the key being stolen led Miss Tari to accuse Brimstone of taking it, which in turn set off Mister Ironchisel's temper. When the proprieter roared for them all to get out, she quickly paid for her items and nearly ran from the store, ears and face hot with a mixture of anger and embarrassment.

She nearly cried when Mister Ironchisel went to retrieve a second key, only to return fuming and empty-hoofed. When Brimstone offered to let her stay in Knobbly Cottage, she breathed deeply a few times, then said a quiet "Thank you," and headed inside. After a moment's thought, she decided to take the key for Room 7, hoping she hadn't displaced another pony. She'd be sure to offer to change rooms if needed. She put her belongings away, and gave in to the temptation to take a quick nap. She'd get up and see about helping with dinner in just a few minutes....

Upon being told of an alternative place to perch, Emrys scampered over to watch Ulrich. He was giving his best pleading face, even squeaking softly for attention, when the stallion walked away. The poor disappointed stoat decided then that if he couldn't go up, he'd go down and started digging a hole in the sand, his favorite new shiny sitting next to his hole.

Meanwhile Brimstone surfaced and blew a small fountain of water into the air. She turned to nod agreement with Nihaia only to see Emrys getting filthy. "Aw, Emrys!" She called, sinking a bit in the water. "You're not getting back on my antlers covered in dirt!"

The stoat either didn't hear her or had very selective understanding. He ignored her completely. Brimstone decided to return the favor and ignore him until she had to deal with it and waved at Nihaia instead.

"I wouldn't mind vacationing here. I love this lake." She smiled. "Actually I like it out here better than the inn anyway. I'm sorta glad we got kicked out." She laughed.

Having dropped off his things and made sure Arlo was settled (he had taken a seat outside on a deck chair to relax), Jerold followed some of the others outside and eyed the deep blue and inviting Caldera lake. He walked down to where Rorschach was sitting, observing the swimming Brimstone and Nihaia. This was much more like what he'd envisaged for his friends, a nice, relaxing time, swimming, laughing and enjoying life. Mercifully Xander and Tari had relocated much further up the beach and Jerold promptly dismissed them from his mind.

"Rorschach! Afraid thy inky markings wilt run? Or wilt thou displaceth too much water with thy large bulk?" Jerold said as he drew level with his Flutter friend. "Last one into the water be a churlish, fly-bitten giglet!" Jerold took a run at the water and leapt in, making a big splash and sending out rippling wavelets in all directions. He waded out a little further and swam around for a bit, thoroughly enjoying the coolness whilst the hot sun beat down upon his head. He ducked under for a few moments then resurfaced, shaking his mane happily. "'Tis wondrous cool indeed!" he exclaimed, swimming round the mares and letting his troubles slip away, just living in the moment.

Rorschach made a face that looked much this:

-_-

It was the only response he gave Jerold to the comment on his 'bulk'. There again, his features almost always were set in that particular expression. He didn't reply, but he did dip his head to undo the small pouch he wore around his foreleg, his precious black stones clacking together as he took it off and set it carefully in the sand. Next, he reached up and, with deft tugs of his teeth, undid the bows that held his bells in place, then tugged the silken ribbon free of the eyelets in his wings. He set both shiny gold bells down by his little leg pouch, fastidiously curling the ribbons atop, and then he trotted liesurely down the beach to the edge.

He knew it was inadvisable to fly in Arcognia, but he figured thirty seconds couldn't hurt too much. So he leapt into the air, gained a good height above the water (and Jerold and the others), then tucked his wings and legs in and dropped like a stone.

The waves he sent out with the velocity of his fall were double that which Jerold had made, and would most likely serve to plaster the mane of anypony nearby to his or her neck and head. He popped back out of the water with a smug look on his elegant face, his legs pinwheeling slowly beneath the cool surface to keep him afloat.

He may have stuck out the tiniest sliver of the end of his tongue at Jerold.

"Cheeky, Ah?" Tari teased, backing away as the Valkyrie joined her. "Ah think no', sir. Yer've go' the wrong mare. Ah think yer bes' geet lookin' else," she said, flicking more water his way as she pawed at the surface.

"Yer also a shamless flatterer, Mister Ironchisel." She shrieked with laughter as the male reared, splashing water in her direction before wading deeper. "Yer ruffian!" she giggled, using her good wing to buffet a spray of water in Ironchisel's direction. This was a lot nicer than dealing with the sour-faced fools up the beach from them. And it was nice to feel properly clean after the horrendous little train.

And the compliments were definitely lovely.

She saw Winter heading into the cottage and called out to him. "Mister Win'er! Don' go lurkin' een there wit' a lang face," she called out, teasingly. "Food can wait a liddle whoile. Yer canno' enjoy stayin' een tharr an' missin' the lake, surely?"

Tari stood, still, with the water just lapping over her hooves. Going further in looked a tad daunting, in all honesty. Maybe just a little further. Snuffling slightly at the water, she moved until she stood with her hocks and knees well under the water.

"If'n Ah didn' know better, Mister Ironchisel, Ah'd say yer were a Mer," she teased.

"Aye, 'tis wondrous indeed, Mistress Nihaia...oh! Takest cover!" Jerold replied to the petite Fairy, then saw Rorschach take off towards the water.

Rorschach's dive into the water from a few feet above it caught Jerold off-guard and resulted in him being drenched again with a large wave that broke over his head. He emerged, spitting out water and laughed, bobbing up and down on the smaller waves that followed. Catching sight of Rorschach's smug expression, Jerold could only chuckle. His Inky friend had far more humour in him that others might be aware of, he certainly didn't lack a sense of fun.

"Have a care, there be ladies present, doubtless not wishing to be doused by thy water bombs!" Jerold chided him, "Thou showest me thy tongue? I didst not take thee for a rude fellow, my friend!"

A few small foals nearby giggled and one with wings tried to ape Rorschach's manoeuvre, but ended up making just a tiny splash.

*****************************

The sound of a chugging small engine began to reach the ears of those with Jerold, not an unfamiliar sound, for it was the sound of a Perambulatron, or Pron as they were known, coming ever nearer. The MerPony driver proceeded along the shoreline, coming from the direction of the Pipe and Goggles. As she neared Jerold's group, she halted her steaming contraption and called out, "Jerold Creaklock! I thought it was thee from thy distinctive laugh. I heard rumours thou wast in the vicinity." Slipping off the Pron and heading with a few strong wriggles across the pebbles and into the water, the MerPony swam easily towards Jerold, Rorschach, Nihaia and Brimstone, her coppery multi-toned mane floating elegantly on the water.

Jerold gasped, shook the remainder of Rorschach's wave out of his eyes and smiled broadly. "Captain Bellatina Pepperwhistle! 'Tis an honour, my lady, I should greet thee more formally!" Jerold had made the acquaintance of the Captain at his watchmaker's shop and once at a Palace function, and had liked her immediately.

"Nay, save thine efforts, pray introduce me to thy good companions,"Captain Pepperwhistle said, taking each of them in with a friendly glance. She looked to have a cheerful disposition, or perhaps that was because she was on vacation.

"Mistresses Brimstone and Nihaia, Mister Rorschach," Jerold obliged. "This be the illustrious Captain Pepperwhistle, captain of the submersible Silent But Deadly, darling of the Arcognian Fleet, is that not so?"

The MerPony gave a throaty laugh and shook her head. "They calleth me not a darling in some circles! What bringeth thou here to Brassmore?" She had heard the rumours of the murders but wanted to see what Jerold would say, in case she offended him or his friends, something the locals seemed to have forgotten, innocent until proven guilty, although she did not think Jerold was capable of murder.

"'Tis a matter of a stolen steam whistle, my lady, it is supposed to be on the bottom of this Caldera," Jerold explained.

The Captain gave another laugh. "Thou speakest in jest? Nay?" she saw his serious expression. "Who wouldst do such a thing? This caldera be uncommon deep. There be no swimming down to find something on the bottom, not e'en for me."

Rorschach took his tongue back immediately.

"My tongue?" he said, his tone as deadpan as ever. "My tongue is used only for speech." A pregnant pause. "In public." The last was said in a throw-away tone, then he was paddling away, heading for Nihaia and Brimstone.

"It is certain I am the ladies hardly mind getting a little damp. It is terribly hot here, for ponies unaccustomed to such weather. For my part, though I come from a hot climate, I find it worse here, for ours is a damp heat, which I am used to. Here it is much drier."

Rorschach tossed his mane a little to flick the damp mass out of his bright eyes and nodded slightly to the mares.

"Are either of you ladies used to this sort of weather?"

Just then, a Merpony mare approached and was introduced as Bellatina Pepperwhistle. He turned about to face her more politely, and again bobbed his head.

Jerold was still chuckling at Rorschach's remarks about his tongue, although his latter remark did puzzle him. However before Jerold could enquire further, he found himself in conversation with submersible Captain Bellatina Pepperwhistle.

"'Tis presumptuous of me to ask thee, for I knowest thou art on vacation here, but I hath cause to search the Caldera floor here to find my steam whistle, for it hath been conveyed to me that it be here," Jerold asked the Captain a little anxiously, not wanting to ask too much and yet needing to do so quite desperately.

Captain Pepperwhistle stared at Jerold, who most definitely was not joking. She nodded and inclined her head politely at Rorschach who had just been introduced, and replied to him whilst she turned over the matter Jerold had brought up in her mind.

"Rorschach it be, then, verily it be a pleasure to meet thee, any friend of Jerold's, thou knowest. Thou mayest call me 'Captain'," she continued, pausing momentarily to see how the exotically Inky Flutter would take her jest, then said, "I jest, of course, thou mayest call me Bellatina, 'tis only my crew who shouldst call me Captain."

Turning back to Jerold she nodded seriously. I wouldst be willing to take thee down, thou knowest I hath the Riveting Rustbucket moored herewith, for tourist tours. But at a pinch we couldst check the floor of the Caldera, if thou wishest?"

Jerold was overwhelmed and nearly forgot to keep paddling. As water threatened to enter his nostrils, he began once more paddling to stay afloat. "Thou wouldst aid me? Of course, there wilt be remuneration for thy assistance, my lady."

"'Tis one problem that we hath, though, dear Jerold, and that be I hath no crew, and for such a mission one hath need of several crew to work the various devices. If thou hast a crew, we can proceed." Captain Pepperwhistle looked expectantly at Jerold and his friends.

"Uhhhh not as such yet these good friends do have their own special skills...I do believe, if it pleaseth thee, that we couldst cobble together a crew?" Jerold pleaded. "I hath at least 8 or 9 with me who couldst help?"

Captain Pepperwhistle swam slowly round the group considering. It was possible, risky but possible. "I shalt think upon it Jerold, 'tis too late today, mayhap tomorrow, I shalt drop by, mid-morning shalt we say? We shalt decide matters therewith."

The Captain looked around the small group again, "What thinkest thou," she said looking at Rorschach, Nihaia and Brimstone (and any others within earshot), do ye fancy a trip in a submersible? Hath thou any talents of merit to contribute?"

Creamy was still chuckling at his own joke when he entered the cottage, at least until a yawn split his beak. Apparently one cup of coffee hadn't been enough to overcome last night's lack of sleep. Grabbing the key to Room 6, he headed upstairs and deposited his things on the floor. The bed looked so inviting, he just needed to lay down for a few minutes....

He was awakened roughly half an hour later by the persistent chattering of a certain jungle squirrel. Saoirse had taken it into her head that her master needed to be outside, and once she saw him open an eye, she scrambled down from her perch on the windowsill and scampered across the floor to the door of the room, making insistent gestures with her forepaws. Somewhat reluctantly, as the bed was so very comfortable, Creamy got up, opened the door, and then - as that did not stop his familiar's insistent chattering in the least - left the room, locked the door, headed downstairs where he replaced the key, and then joined the others on the beach.

The group had been joined by now by a MerPony Creamy didn't recognize (Captain Bellatina Pepperwhistle) - or rather, he didn't think he recognized her, as she was in the water and he was still on the beach. He was however close enough to hear her enquiry about submersible tours.

"A submersible tour? That does sound interesting. I've never been on one of those before," the dragon responded. "Oh, and my name's Creamy. And this," he indicated the small splotch of brown fur who was now busily investigating pebbles in hopes of finding a disguised nut or two, "is my familiar Saoirse." He was addressing Captain Pepperwhistle, though anyone within earshot could hear him.

Hath thou any skill to offer this poor Captain? My crew hath gone on vacation and I must therefore rely upon Jerold's friends to compensate in order to make the voyage." Captain Pepperwhistle whipped her head round swiftly to look Jerold straight in the eye, "And I hath not as yet agreed to this venture, for safety must come first," she finished sternly, for though Bellatina could be utterly charming and flirtatious, she had a will of iron and would stand no nonsense. She turned back to face Creamy, her charming smile gone, a steely expression replacing it, "As for thy creature, charming as she is, she cannot come along on our trip, for I find familiars and submersibles mixeth not."

"I wouldn't mind vacationing here. I love this lake." She smiled. "Actually I like it out here better than the inn anyway. I'm sorta glad we got kicked out."

"So am I. The cottage is lovely, and there's more privacy here then there would have been at the Inn. Cooking dinner will be a pleasure, for me at least. I won't miss the chance to eat out at all. And it really is nice being just our group. I'd love to vacation here, too." Nihaia said with a smile.

Nihaia listened to the banter between Jerold, and Roschach, and laughed. It felt really good to just be able to relax, and enjoy herself. Such times were few and far between for her, and Nihaia intended to take advantage of it while she could.

"Aye, 'tis wondrous indeed, Mistress Nihaia...oh! Takest cover!"

Nihaia's eyes widened, and she looked around frantically, but she didn't see anything wrong. Before she had a chance to react, she found herself submerged by a large wave. Nihaia came up to the surface coughing, and laughing. The cool water felt wonderful, even if she hadn't expected to be swamped like that. Nihaia saw the foals playing nearby, and smiled in amusement as one of them tried to copy Rorschach's stunt.

"It is certain I am the ladies hardly mind getting a little damp. It is terribly hot here, for ponies unaccustomed to such weather. For my part, though I come from a hot climate, I find it worse here, for ours is a damp heat, which I am used to. Here it is much drier."

"I don't mind at all. The water really does feel wonderful. Still..."

Nihaia flapped her wings enough to lift her partially from the water. Then she struck the water in Roschach's direction in an attempt to splash him.

"Turnabout is fair play, after all." she said with an impish grin.

"Are either of you ladies used to this sort of weather?"

Nihaia nodded.

"Mostly, anyway. Ilder Isle can be really hot in the summer. Not quite this hot, usually, but it's easier to adjust to this than it was trying to deal with how cold it was in Skora. While I was there, I began to feel as though I would never be warm again. Like you, though, I am used to a damp heat. And my village is right at the sea, so there is usually a nice breeze blowing off the water to help cool the air somewhat."

"Mistresses Brimstone and Nihaia, Mister Rorschach," Jerold obliged. "This be the illustrious Captain Pepperwhistle, captain of the submersible Silent But Deadly, darling of the Arcognian Fleet, is that not so?"

"It's nice to meet you, ma'am." Nihaia said politely.

"What thinkest thou," she said looking at Rorschach, Nihaia and Brimstone (and any others within earshot), do ye fancy a trip in a submersible? Hath thou any talents of merit to contribute?"

"I'd love to go. I want to help Jerold get his steam whistle back if I can, and going under water in a ship...submersible sounds like a lot of fun. What kind of talents would be useful? I'm afraid I'm not used to all of these wonderful devices you have here. Other than the big ships used to travel in between islands, Ilder Isle doesn't have anything more advanced than a simple pony drawn cart for carrying people and supplies. And carts that carry people are only used by tourists, nobles, and royals. But I'd be happy to help if I can."

Creamy nodded his comprehension. "Safety must indeed be a prime concern for a submersible tour. I've not had experience with them myself, but I am a smith by profession, so at the very least I could probably help with powering the vessel. As for Saoirse... she won't like being left behind, but it wouldn't be the first time I've had to leave her someplace where she could be out of harm's way."

Rorschach nodded gravely when Bellatina asserted he could call her Captain.

"Aye, then, Captain it is," he said, and either seemed to miss the joke or dismiss it. Probably the latter. Such titles as "Captain" were very important in his own home.

She asked if they had any talents and he shook his head.

"Nothing specific to submersibles, I must say, being as I have never heard of one until one. However, I am a quick learner. I only need to be told something once to know how to do it." He paused, and seemed to struggle with himself, then he went on to admit; "However, I am... a slow thinker... sometimes dangerously so. I lose myself in my thoughts and cannot make head nor tails of the decision at hand."

It was hard for him to say so, for he knew what a weakness it was. However, as the Captain had pointed out, it was a matter of safety, and if he were put on a job that required quick decisions, he could end up killing them all.

He was about to say more when Nihaia's wave splashed over him from behind.

"Turnabout, is it?" he said, turning about himself to face her. "Fair play, is it? Well. There is no fair play in battle!"

And he struck out across the water towards her, intent on dunking her beneath the surface.

"Turnabout, is it?" he said, turning about himself to face her. "Fair play, is it? Well. There is no fair play in battle!"

Nihaia squealed in delight, and made a swim for it, but Rorschach got to her before she could get far, and dunked her under. She was expecting as much, and got a good breath of air before going under, though. Instead of swimming up to the surface immediately, she tried to grab his leg, and pull him under with her.

Brimstone found it easier to duck under the water than try and avoid Jerold's waves. She like swimming below anyway. Always had really. She'd just never been all that good at. Probably because of the whole hooves instead of fins thing.

When she saw Rorshach coming that was another story. She made an O face before backpedaling quickly. Not an easy task when you're also laughing hard. The inky looking stallion had more of a sense of humor than first glance might suggest. The waves from him soaked her head pretty well and left her spitting water thanks to an open, still laughing, mouth.

The arrival of a sea captain brought her up short to investigate this newcomer. The mer made her own efforts at swimming look clumsy. Brimstone envied her that, though she preferred the ability to walk on land. She paddled over to meet the female with a smile.

"Some fool decided his whistle was a good prize to toss in a lake." Brimstone nodded. "No need for the mistress part by the way. I'm not really used to titles. Glad to meet you though Captain." She grinned.

As for nautical skills, that was a toughie. Brimstone frowned slightly as she thought it over before coming up with something. "I can tie knots and set things on fire." She announced. "Are either of those useful things?"

She heard Emrys squeaking on the shore and turned to look. Apparently he'd found a crawdad and the association was not going well. Brimstone stifled a laugh and returned her attention to the captain.

"Not even tiny ones? I hate to leave him behind." She questioned. "We haven't been apart since I called him. He'll be worried." She didn't want to admit she'd be lonely without him too. The little stoat was probably her best friend in the world.

Nihaia seemed to be a quiet little thing, Bellatina observed, yet she would be obedient to any orders. "Thou knowest 'up', 'down', 'left' and 'right'? Then should shalt be well suited to the task I hath in mind for thee, fret thee not, simplicity be sometimes the best preparation," she told the Fairy kindly. "Hast thou any magic?"

The Captain's ears perked up as Creamy told her he was a smith. "Verily? 'Tis wondrous to hear, sir, thou wilt be of great use, the boiler area wilt need somepony to keep an eye on it. I wilt explain more of the workings once we board, 'tis rather unique, not at all like the Arcognian Express's more rustic system." She listened attentively to Rorschach's explanation. She found him unsettlingly attractive, perhaps it was his long braided mane? So different from those individuals she met at Court. Pushing those feelings away she nodded as he explained he was not a quickly decisive pony. "That is why I am Captain! I maketh all decisions, sometimes I must do so in seconds. My crew art given orders, all thou must do is follow them and assure thou art attentive. I do feel thou art indeed attentive," she finished up with a sly flutter of the eyelashes at him, so quick if you blinked you'd have missed it. She chuckled as he swam off to playfully dunk Nihaia. These were obviously a group of good friends.

Jerold meanwhile had swum off towards the mares, Nihaia and Brimstone and was sending the odd splash of fun in their direction.

The Reindeer doe named Brimstone claimed to be good at knots and setting things alight. The latter would definitely not do. "Knots I hath some use for, but fire, 'tis not prudent in an enclosed vessel. I think thou wouldst do well in steering the vessel, or altering the pitch. Aye, 'twould suit thee well I feel."

As Brimstone pleaded to be allowed to have Emrys along on the trip, the Captain smiled indulgently for a moment, then shook her head firmly. "Nay. I hath learned early on in my career that familiars are a liability, tiny or no. 'Twas an Arcognian Dust Rat that taught me a lesson I shalt ne'er forget, critters and buttons goeth not well together," Even now Bellatina recalled the panic as her sub had begun to depressurise due to the Dust Rat running amok and pressing things he shouldn't. Since then she had never allowed a familiar anywhere near her sub.

"Steering?" It was unexpected, but Brimstone nodded. "Sure, I can do that." At least she thought so. It might be a little hard to get used to the controls, but if she thought if it like swimming in style, that should work.

As for leaving Emrys behind, she glanced at the boat, and thought about him loose on a ship with buttons. Shiny ones most likely. That he would feel the need to detach and hide someplace... OK so the stoat did not need to go on an underwater boat.

"Alright. I'll just have to stuff him with ham when I get back so he'll forgive me." She decided. The word made the little weasel poke his head up from his considerably deep (for a stoat dug hole) hole and look over at her. That word he knew well, but there was no ham in sight. After a second and a look of what Brimstone was sure was annoyance, he resumed his tunneling.

Maybe missing Emrys would be able to keep her mind off what she was going to be doing. Steering was all well and good, but she'd have to get in this little sub to do it. And then go underwater. Not just a little distance either, but all the way to the bottom.

She disguised a shudder by flicking water back in Jerolds direction with a smile. Everything would be fine. It was just water not a cave. There would not be a repeat of that indignity. She would never live it down if Tari and Xander saw her freaking out.

Ack, sorry I appear to have missed out on posting it although I have it written up! Could have sworn I posted it! Here it is, apologies!}

"Thou liketh a bit o' rough, eh wench?" Xander joked and splashed Tari again. Leaving Creaklock and pals behind had been the best thing that could have happened, even though he could still, if he tried, see them frolicking in the water further down the shore. He couldn't quite stop taking a peek every so often, for he meant to keep them under surveillance, for somewhere in the depths of this vast Caldera was a steam whistle, the rustiest steam whistle in Arcognia, Xander thought, snickering at his own joke.

"A Mer eh? 'Tis a pity I be not one, for then I couldst perchance glimpse Creaklock's whistle rusting on the floor of this Caldera!"

*********************

Ulrich heard Tari's summons to come in and enjoy the water. Curses. He dumped the food bag in the kitchen, and put on his best 'social' face and went back outside, delaying it as long as possible. He wasn't a fan of the water, not since the accident many years previously when one of his sisters drowned, not here, but at Cogsville Sands, a beach not too far from the capital. He'd only been a colt himself, so the memories were fragments, but it still chilled him to think of it, and he did not care for the beach afterwards.

"I'll pass, if you don't mind, I prefer to sit in the deck chair and catch the cool breeze." he said, and indeed a cooling lake to shore breeze had started up, providing welcome relief from the heat to those who sat along the shore, and wafting into open cottage windows. The afternoon was indeed idyllic as the purplish-hued sky returned to signal the onset of sunset.

Rorschach looked pleased with himself as he back-paddled so Nihaia could surface again, just as Jerold swam over to splash the girls again. He glanced back when the Mer Captain spoke to him again.

"Aye," he said agreeably. "Well, if someone is telling me what must needs be done, I can do it fast enough, and as well as I have been taught."

Ever had Rorschach been the observant type, and so he didn't miss the flutter of her lashes. He absently tossed his head, flicking his shaggy forelock back behind one ink-blotted ear.

"Attentive, aye. Never have I been accused of being inattentive."

He bobbed his head once more.

"I look forward to studying your submersible, Captain," he said evenly, then returned to the game with Jerold and the mares, using his wings to make arcing waves.

As the sun began to dip towards the horizon, Bellatina Pepperwhistle, swam out of the water, shook her hair in a carefree manner and called back to Jerold and the others. "Splendid Miss Nihaia, light magic is always welcome on a sub. I wilt see thee all early tomorrow morning, for we shalt make a start on retrieving thy whistle, Jerold! I bid thee all a pleasant e'en!" It still concerned her, however, that they did not yet have enough ponies to provide a crew.

With those thoughts in mind the Captain remounted her Pron and started the machine whirring, putt..putt..putt..chuga-chuga-chuga! it transported the MerPony along the beach towards her own holiday cottage, by chance, the one next door to where Xander, Tari and Ulrich were staying. Parking the Pron in front of her cottage, she padlocked it to a special railing and then relaxed out front to watch the sunset, always a pleasant ritual and even more so when one spent so much time below the waves, with no sight of daylight at all.

Nihaia surfaced just in time to get splashed by Jerold. She sputtered, and laughed for a moment, then attempted to retaliate flapping one wing so that the displaced air would hit the water and send a wave in his direction. It felt so good to play like this. Nihaia had had few opportunities to do so, even as a foal, and she was enjoying every moment.

"Thou knowest 'up', 'down', 'left' and 'right'? Then should shalt be well suited to the task I hath in mind for thee, fret thee not, simplicity be sometimes the best preparation," she told the Fairy kindly. "Hast thou any magic?"

Nihaia nodded.

"Yes, I do." she said simply.

Sea Foam woke and stretched luxuriously, feeling refreshed by her nap. Lazily she turned her head to glance out the window, only to gasp in dismay at the slowly-purpling sky. How long had she slept?! The others were sure to think that she was nothing but a layabout. Scrambling out of her bed, she headed outside, pausing just long enough to lock her door. Stringing the key on one of the cords she'd purchased, she slid it over her head and shook it down around her neck as she trotted down the stairs and out onto the beach.

Mister Creaklock, Mister Rorschach, Miss Nahaia, and Miss Brimstone were frolicking in the water, and Sea Foam swam out to join them. "I'm so sorry, I didn't mean to sleep so long," she said apologetically to everyone in earshot. "Did I miss anything important?" A wave generated by Miss Nahaia's fluttering wing splashed her, and Sea Foam concentrated and used the cool breeze to send a wave back at her. "Two can play at that game, Miss Nahaia!" she cried, laughing and hoping that her gesture would be taking in the playful spirit it was intended. If she meant to stay with these ponies, she hoped to get to know them a little better and become part of the group, rather than a hanger-on.
